it's silly to teach a dog that bits the helper to then get petted by the helper. The helper is not a "Friend" of the dog, but represents what in real life would be a criminal. These dogs bite in prey drive, for the prey object. What dog would be petted by a criminal? The defense drive is developed when dog believes the helper can hurt the dog
good initial training in prey drive but why pet them?.

@alexnds1 The 'Training' taking place with the dog is teaching him to differentiate when the handler makes the call of when to bite and when not to. Not all bad guys jump up and down, as some are passive. It's a big liability if you have a dog that just goes on 'motion' or when the dog deems it right. The picture is the same, but I am telling the handler when the dog is to bite or not to.

@fredhassen Forgot to add that not everyone that approaches a police dog is a bad guy, so you don't want the dog just biting when someone approaches.

@alexnds1 Teaching the dog to distinguish what the handler tells them is the difference. Obviously, if the dog gets to just decide whatever he wants to do, it would be a liability and he'd be biting everyone. I am telling the handler whether I am a threat or not by telling him 'bite' or 'pet'. The handler makes the decisions. Having the ability to turn him on and off.
