Exclusive Video material, recorded in Eindhoven, The Netherlands '82 Hermann Nitsch Main guest at Incubate 2009 13-20 september, Tilburg, Holland www.incubate.org
@yiinyiinable : Sorry, your explanation is plain crap: in '82 Bruno Kreisky from Austrian Socialist Party was in his 12th year as Bundeskanzler. The SPÖ is a dedicated leftwing party hence quite the opposite of a rightwing fascist party.
Nitsch never ever engaged in political actions his art is totally non political.
He had repeated clashes with the Catholic Church because he often uses christian symbols as a crossed human but his art has nothing to do with religion neither.
@Gemisx You are right. Good art is the one that provokes feeling to the one who is experiencing it, wether it is a good feeling or a bad, guilty or a repulsive feeling.
@Gemisx I believe this is a really respectable form of art and I support it deeply, for I understand creativity and bravery are recquired in order to create it. - Pamela tijerina, Lorena Jaymez
@a090006 As yiinyiinable said, the historical context helps with the understanding. The reaction is relative to the viewer. I understood this as a wake up call to Austrians about the government, and the art world that not all art is 'cookie cutter perfect'. The argument is why it ISN'T art. There is composition, provocative subject matter and it is experienced instead of viewed. Not all emotional reaction to art has to be good, and I think this is what Nitsch is exploring.
You cannot understand an artist's work if you don't take into account its historical context. When Nitsch performed this, Hitler was dead and WWII was over but Austria was still ruled by nazis. He founded an actionnist movement in which, with works like this one, he tried to wake up Austrian people. he's just saying "hey guys, you find this choking ? well just look who's at the head of our country and at all the horrors that have just occured across the whole europe during the war, REACT !"
@ladynevermore people are not dumb because they do not like this for whatever reason, that is what art is,every body has is own opinion about it and that makes art so interesting. To discuse about it to sheare opinions.Trying to explain what it 's all about. You may like a Rubens or dislike it or you go hot for this one.The fact that so many people react on this one, means that his "art"is working,Art becoms intrersting if people can explain how to look at the beauty
@Gemisx you can call this a piece off art, just like you say its something to make people think, I would call this a piece off thinking, think about beauty, other artists who make incredible art, other things made by humans or whatever to think about ,birth and dead ,but this is ,I don't know what it is,pure uglyness , like the killings in war....is that what he 's trying to show?first time I see Hermann Nitsch,.
The fact that there is such a reaction to this shows that this piece of art has done it's job, I'm watching this as research for my MDrama, and his use of body is fantastic. It is provocative and the colours are beautiful. It is art, not reality. It is a performance that reflects humanity and your reaction is part of his exploration of violence and humanity.
