My father had a "rich maroon" plastic tabletop radio in the '50s, which he gave to my brother when he got a transistor radio - which, come to think of it, was also maroon. But the first radio, in spite of its convenient size, wasn't a true portable because it had to be plugged in.
Radios like this had tubes, and when you turned them on, they didn't function immediately. The tubes had to "warm up" before you could hear anything.

@avantisprod Just a clip out of my archive. I have about 4000 hours of archive films that I'm slowly posting on YouTube. A lot of automotive history from the over 200 automotive history programs I've produced and loads of general history material as well.
