I did the look at my hands thing in a dream and had six fingers on each hand, it was weird. Though I've found that double checking words and numbers work the best, in a dream they will mix or change and make no sense I've had letters on a clock before. Another thing I do is trying to move something small with my mind but I've never seen anyone on lucid dreaming sites do that so that may just be my 'totem'

When I was in high school I used to read my Latin assignments in my dreams and do my homework. I could just turn pages and cover the whole book. I knew what I was doing, completely conscious. After that I lost interest because my normal, spontaneous dreaming is so entertaining.
