This is the same yirdaki as played by Nicky Yunupingu in another clip:

This is an instrument with a rustic look and feel, something made for use rather than for sale. It has a rough finish instead of a smooth polished look that is more common on commercial instruments... you can still see some of the 'chop' marks where a blade has prised off bark and outer layers of sapwood. Plus lots of handling patination to the whole of the instrument which I love as it gives the yirdaki a lovely used appearance with darkening of the wood in areas of frequent handling.
Nicky told me that the strip of brown packing tape at the mouthpiece end is merely an identifier, rather than to patch a leak. The tape allows him to keep track of the yirdaki so that it doesn't get lost or 'borrowed' by family.
This is a top-notch yirdaki, as one would expect of Nicky's personal instrument. It has loads of bass response and wonderful back pressure, and is just a lovely and fun instrument to play. Dhapirrk!
