@T0rttillaB0y NBC asked Conan to come host the Tonight Show, succeeding Jay Leno, but due to conflicts, he left the show within a matter of months.

I think the more accurate explanation is: Conan was OFFICIALLY given the opportunity to be Leno's Tonight Show successor, as declared by NBC in 2004, when Leno was to "retire" in 2009. This plan was 5 years in the making. But in 2009, as Conan moved to The Tonight Show, Leno decided he wanted to stay on TV, so NBC gave him a weird 10pm slot, then later wanted to change up the slots, ultimately moving The Tonight Show's vested 11:35pm start to a 12:05am start. Instead of compromising, Conan quit.

Conan bombed too. His ratings were in the toilet.

nbc asked conan to come host the tonight show in LA, when leno got his own show at 10. Leno's show bombed, and so NBC bumped conan off the the tonight show and put leno back on, leaving conan with no show and he had to go to TBS
