The first piece we'll study is "Down the Dirt Road Blues" by Charley Patton (Paramount, Richmond 1928). Charlie Patton, better known as Charley Patton was born in 1891 or 1894. He died on the Heathman-Dedham plantation near Indianola, Mississippi, from heart disease on April 28, 1934. Compare the guitar accompaniment to Patton's "34 Blues," which is slower but virtually the same.
Just about every Charley Patton song has a really cool guitar part in it. "Down the Dirt Road Blues" is no exception - this little 2-bar turnaround riff is a great example of how much fun it can be to play the guitar this way. We're capoed up one fret and we're in the key of C. The turnaround should be played in an expressive style, snapping the bass strings (played with the thumb) against the fretboard.

  • @babyrakes um ok ... cuz charley patton was black. moron.

  • Thanks Paul.. I still play and love this song you taught me. Hope you're doing well. From a former dedicated student now living in CT. Best wishes.. and I still have all the tapes. Dan F

  • @babyrakes You sound perhaps a little pregidous, this is obviuosly meant to be a little straight sounding so you can hear all the changes and notes clearly if you have ever listened to this original it is very hard to distinguish, this is a lesson and it is a good one it is up to you to develop the percussion parts that actually make the song ,charlie was the worlds best percussion player, but the over loud vocal and one mic recordinds make it hard to hear and copy ,fine job for a lesson paul

  • thank you

  • Mesmerizing.

  • i love it! absolutely pure and beautiful!

  • Wonderfull ... 5 *****

  • Nice

  • No soul....this old white man has a nice guitar and can play well but the blues is about the soul....and the sound coming out of this man is just flat and empty...kinda sad to see this song played like this

  • holy s**t ! That was great! good playing and your singing was mostly in key.
