@NearAbbeyRoad Still two flying now for the Martin-Baker company (Jan 2012) as ejection seat testbeds.

@mig25pd Although she WAS a mediocre performer by today's standards she was the fastest plane in the world for several years and was much superior to either USA or USSR jets of 1945...

Brings back old memories hearing the typical Meteor howl. I'm quite sure that I heard a Hawker Hunter starting up when the Meteor was on finals. You can guess my age by now :-)

The 262 to the Meteor was oudated. The pilot was too far back with poor visibility - a throwover from piston planes. The Meteor had the pilot way forward.
262 had its wings more swept & a piston plane body. Swept wings gave poor agility - UK & US jet had straight wings for dog-flights post WW2.
Meteor was all pure jet body with a fully develeoped engine with twice the power/weight ratio, far superior fuel consumption of 262 - lasted 150 hours not 10.
Meteor was in opeation until the 80s

The 262 was far underdeveloped and panicked into service. It was a glorified kamikazee plane, as it sometimes went back to base, unlike Jap planes. It killed more German than allied men because of compessor stall, & engine fail.
The first operational fighter in operation to "fight the enemy" was the British Meteor. The 262 was in a squadron for testing purposes first, one 262 met a Mosquito which flew off. The Meteor was first to shoot down an airborne weapon - which was also a jet

@legendoffuzz This is a WW2 fighter, being flown at an airshow.

I guess that you have zero appreciation for history......
-
Hey squizzo. the Germans developed there jet without knowing the British were developing theirs. the Heinkel 178 flew in 1939 BEFORE the Gloster E28 in 1941. check it out . the British gave their technology to the Americans. get it right
-
A lot of idiots think Nazi Germany invented the jet and had the first flying jet fighter.
It was England.
The US wasn't even in the running and had to steal British technology to even try.

Why are people still flying in this. Its a piece of shi*t. There are new planes that are better now, like the boeing or the Huey 3.
my father flew a meteor whislt in the RAF still my favourite aircaft and always will be

Thanks. Never seen a Meteor airborne - but one of my favourite aircraft. Only a mediocre performer but she represents a great period of aviation history - and pilots smoked pipes and wore a tie!!
