In this video, Dr Hugo Dobson - Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield - examines Japan's role in the G8, a year after it played host at the Hokkaido Toyako Summit. The most obvious difference is a change in Japanese leadership with Taro Aso attending his first - perhaps only - G8 summit. Dr Dobson notes the lack of civil society organization at the L'Aquila Summit, particularly of the Japanese groups. Finally, he details Japan's resistence to membership reform with the addition of China, as this move would decrease its ability to act as the voice of East Asia.
