Italian Prime Minister, Mario Monti and French President Francois Hollande both looked forward to a future Europe in which there was work for young people and growth and solidarity was strong among the individual countries.

They were responding to questions in an exclusive interview with euronews.

Francois Hollande considered Europe had made "much progress in 2012," and highlighted the new deal for Greece and the support for Spanish banks. He admitted that a few months ago the eurozone's survival was still in question, but that was not the case now.

He denied Germany was leading where Europe followed.

The French president talked about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict saying it had, "lasted too long," adding he was a "friend" of the two countries and suggested going back to the Oslo agreement as a new starting point.

The Italian PM said that the situation in Europe and the eurozone in particular, was caused by errors and short-term thinking adding that those who were suffering most at the moment were the younger generation.
