A beautiful, sad Irish tune written by Ralph McTell. I've been in a mood where I'm homesick for three things: home; Ireland; and my childhood. Weird combination, but whatever, this song speaks to my soul. And I love it!
lyrics:
There's four who share this room as we work hard for the craic
And sleeping late on Sundays I never get to Mass

It's a long, long way from Clare to here
It's a long way from Clare to here
It's a long, long way, it grows further by the day
It's a long way from Clare to here

When Friday comes around Ted is only into fighting
My ma would like a letter home but I'm too tired for writing

Chorus

And the only time I feel alright is when I'm into drinking
It sort of eases the pain of it and levels out my thinking

Chorus

It almost breaks my heart when I think of Josephine
I told her I'd be coming home with my pockets full of green

Chorus

I sometimes hear a fiddle play or maybe it's a notion
I dream I see white horses dance upon that other ocean

Chorus

It's a long, long way from Clare to here.

  • Hi Mary!

Is this song only available on "The Essential Irish Folk Collection" or is it on some Jim McCann album I don't know?

    Cheers

    Chris

  • @cccoville Yes, this song was on the Essential Irish Folk Collection :) It's a great song<3

  • @XxXcoolbeansyeaXxX It's especially a great new versionof this fine song! Too bad it's only on the compilation (I have most of the other recordings) and didn't come out on a regular McCann album! Thank you for the fast response and info!

  • @cccoville Mhm, I love this version! And no problem(:

  • I grew up in Clare and moved away when I was 8 years old..I remember the beautiful nature, the burren and the cliffs of moher and the small villages with the music..of course there was also the normal daily life but those are the things i remember best.. it hurts to be reminded of such an amazing childhood by a beautiful song!

  • @QueenBlond sorry that it hurts :\ but i hope you get a visit back some day soon!(:
