"Why Musicians Need More Than Viral Videos to Succeed"

As guitarist and co-founder of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan was at the forefront of one of the most important music movements in recent history. He is not finished yet. The Pumpkins have a new album coming out on June 19th, and Corgan is splitting time between music and helping artists take back control from labels. He wants talented musicians to have more lucrative careers and to engage their fans. He notes the difficulties in keeping sustained relevance in an industry that has become a commodity and is service oriented. He is calling on fans to invest in the artists that they believe in as a way of supporting genuine talent. Corgan encourages both artists and fans to assume responsibility in the future of music and to make it into something more than just viral videos and hit singles.

Corgan believes that the music industry is currently structured to prevent artists from achieving the type of success that his band enjoyed in the 1990s. In fact, Corgan does not believe that the Pumpkins could achieve the same level of success if the band debuted today. He advises new artists to master multiple fields and to go beyond music. He believes that today's artists can use different forms of technology to create an experience that transcends multiple mediums.

Thank you for uploading this. Billy always gives a great informative interview. As a struggling writer and sometimes musician myself, it's great to hear his thoughts on these topics.

Musicians like Billy Corgan and Jack White actually know about and respect music. They care enough about it that they want to preserve it's beauty and meaningfulness for future generations, and for that I have nothing but respect for them and I thank God for them. I just hope that either myself or any other person who inspires to be a musician or artist will take heed of what Billy is saying, if and when we decide to go out and create music for people.

That's a shame, cause I'm a poet, and sometimes I roll out of bed and write a poem or two. Note that poetry is shit on a stick compared to music, but still. I do that. And I should also try to not forget that poetry is dead. Music is still alive, a little beaten up, but still alive. So what I'm trying to say is I should become a musician and try to connect to an audience. But there's just one problem: I can't sing. Or play any instruments except the saxaphone a little bit. So I should just quit.

ITS OVER. Only people who can survive in the music industry are manufactured pop stars or artists who were established before the internet blew up.
