Mai Shbeta is a living example of hope. She lives in an Israeli settlement comprised equally of Israelis and Palestinians. Indeed, her own family is made up of both. The experience has taught her that understanding and empathy can be achieved, whatever the enmity, assuming each side of a dispute can be given a forum to build personal relationships with the other.
Shbeta's initiative is a peace camp that brings together Israeli and Palestinian girls. The girls spend three weeks together. More often than not, girls who enter the camp as enemies emerge as friends, going on to become active messengers and advocates for reconciliation. Shbeta hopes to increase the number of peace camps and girls who are able to attend them.
Using existing NGOs could help Shbeta make her programme more sustainable and provide long-term projects for girls to pursue once they have left the camp. There could be opportunities for corporations who benefit from disputes, such as arms manufacturers, to provide mandated funding for such initiatives in the form of offsets.
