Years of planning to sink the ex HMAS Adelaide was held up after an Avoca protest group gained a last minute court injunction to stop the scuttling from taking place on 27th March 2010.
An estimated 500-strong crowd of pro-ship supporters included politicians, councillors, environmental groups, scientists, business people, ex-servicemen, and residents assembled at Terrigal Skillion to show their continued support for the project.
The ex HMAS Adelaide was to have been scuttled in the HMAS Adelaide Marine Reserve off the Central Coast. The reserve had been declared since June 2008 and Police were predicting 50,000 people would turn out to see the sinking of the ship, which was expected to become a popular dive site.
