ARMENIAN MISERLOU from RACINE
This dance was filmed at Ira Weisburd's International Folk Dance Class in Margate, Florida. It was introduced by Janet Higgs.
BACKGROUND: This dance was developed by Tondee Akgoulian and her family in the 1960's
in Racine, Wisconsin. The Akgoulian family band played for Armenian weddings, parties,
picnics, and other events in southeastern Wisconsin for a number of years. This dance
was apparently developed for the dance group which sometimes performed with the band.
The dance is a mixture of steps found in other Armenian dances done at that time. This
description represents the version of the dance currently done in the international folkdance community of Madison, Wisconsin. Description by Michael Kuharski.
MUSIC: The Racine community usually dances this to the melody "Mechus Gyank Chi Menatz".
An Israeli song renamed "Yarus" or "Varter" by Armenians also can be used.
Michael Kuharski has custom-edited a recording from the oud music of John Bilezikjian.
FORMATION: Mixed line. Leader is at the right end of the line.
HOLD: Pinky-hold, hands in raised, relaxed W-position.
RHYTHM: 2+1+1 = Slow-quick-quick = Sqq.
