Lord Steinberg of Belfast was born and brought up in Northern Ireland — and remained firmly attached to the Province after moving to England in 1977. He was one of Britain's preeminent businessmen, growing a single unlicensed betting shop at the back of his father's Belfast milk shop into a multi-million pound casino and betting shop business -- the Stanley Leisure Group.
Lord Steinberg was also a prominent philanthropist. In 1999, he was appointed as Deputy Treasurer of the Conservative Party and was ennobled in 2004. He died on 2nd November 2009.
