Tube Lines are responsible for both maintenance and upgrade work on the Jubilee line, Northern line and Piccadilly line. We also provide a number of services across the network including the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Distribution Services and Trans Plant. We also deliver a growing catalogue of safety and skills courses as well as competency management consultancy.

Maintaining the system
Over the first 7½ years of our agreement with London Underground, around half of Tube Lines' £4.5 billion plus investment will be used to maintain the system. This is a massive task, as Tube Lines inherited some of the oldest infrastructure on the network. A history of under investment and inconsistent maintenance regimes has further impacted on system reliability. There is a great deal of work required to ensure that the Tube is fully operational every morning and we have to have a highly responsive maintenance capability to deal with unplanned work.

Each and every night of the year, thousands of Tube Lines employees and contractors are out on the railway, ensuring that it is fit and ready for service each morning. This army of night workers operates mainly between the hours of midnight until four in the morning. Maintaining the system is a hugely challenging job and requires an attention to detail to make sure that the right people and right equipment are in the right places each night. Tube Lines has introduced new technology to help understand the bigger picture of where maintenance is most required to enable the company to focus resources in the right place.

  • Tube lines, boob lines.

  • I really love Tube lines, i wish i was part of this company

  • I really love tube trains en public transport.

Can somebody who works for the London underground do me a favour?

I think those mind the gap souvenirs are getting boring and I am looking for the real thing.

Is there somebody from the London Underground who can arrange a window seal that has been used by the 1995 or 1996 Stock tube train for me? I like to collect it for my public transport collection.

    Thank you very much.

Sorry if my English is not perfect, that is because I live in Holland.

  • Yeah, they were the better out of the Metronet and TLL.

  • However, if it wasn't for the threat of unions striking every time a bolt was inserted into a wall and the hoops needed to jump through dictated by the LUL. I feel a lot more money could be saved and better infrastructure installed as a result.

  • I love all the comments below slating TLL. It if fairly strange though that there is a Tube strike at the moment and the only lines operating a normal service are JNP lines. Yes, a lot of money is wasted on improving the network and bringing it in line with the necessary standards due to the lack of investment by LUL in the past.

  • Meh, TBH I'm personally not bothered about the upgrade works. They may not be perfect, but remember that the lines and the rest of the tube system needs this otherwise it could fall apart, and that's no good. =(

They're preserving the heritage of the older stations, which is good thing. But I disagree with those DMI with annoucements, but I guess they are there for a reason.

And no, it's not just the 1995ts that are the problem, the rest of the LU fleet break down sometimes, no?

  • Waterloo being the most recent example, they have gutted out the old (decent) design and replaced it with creamy tiling yuck!

And as for investing in the tube, all they do is rip Tfl off, create extra red tape and give back hardly anything.
