This is the greatest commercial of all time. That sweeping shot at the beginning...When the boy in the back looks over at the girl...When the back car light goes on... It's so perfect and beautiful and wonderfully understated. So much from something so simply stated.

Doesn't matter how people have found Nick Drake's music. What matters is that they have come across it and they immediately relate to the beauty of his music and poetry.

Nick Drake had some really unusual tunings. That's what made his songwriting so unique. When I bought my last guitar I detuned it at the guitar shop before I bought it so I could play Pink Moon on it and see how it sounded. That's my test for a beautiful sounding acoustic guitar. I used to sit in my back yard under the stars and play this along with a few other Nick Drake favorites (Harvest Breed is another).

Nick Drake was so withdrawn, and in so much psychic pain when he finished the Pink Moon LP, that he dropped it off at the Island front desk, where it sat around for weeks before anyone listened to it.

He then went on to overdose or suicide.

Sorry I get upset when a great artist's dignity is trampled by an uncaring corporate culture that digs up the graves of defiantly anti-corporate icons, and sets the reanimated corpses to task as pitchmen.

But I guess Zombies are a big hit these days.

The commercial was made by Bob Industries out of Santa Monica, CA in 1999. The two main company directors are the husband/wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

@jimsguts: You said it perfectly. For some reason, those exact shots in that sequence you mentioned, with that song in the background is absolutely perfect! Something about it sparks a memory, or something in the viewer (for those that 'get' it), and doesn't need to spell it out for the viewer. Relies on pure emotion through understatement. It's too bad that most ads can't be this thoughtful and not treat the viewers like we're thick.
