Probably my most favorite commercial. Driving at night like that is pure bliss. This commercial was so good in fact the Cartoon Network did one just like it using the Scooby Doo gang and the mystery machine...classic.
This has got to be the only commercial that has remained stuck in my head years later. I've been hearing a few of Nick Drake's songs used in a few TV shows and felt the urge to go watch this commercial again. I loved every second of it and if it wasn't for this commercial, I would have never known who Nick Drake was. Good Job VW ;)
i know we're all supposed to hate ads. but i just wanna know..
if you saw this on vimeo or wherever, and the commercial showed lots more imagery for throughout the entire song.. and the audio from the crappy party was taken out.. and the song was actually played in full.. and they were driving in a 1972 buick gs instead.. and maybe the film was all grainy and widescreen.. and there was no ad the end.. just fade to black.. would you still hate it?
the truth for me is.. i would not know about nick drake at all if it weren't for this ad, no matter how pretentious it is. and yes it's the song that gives you most of the feeling, but don't tell me you wouldn't wanna listen to it driving with the top down on a full moonlit night.
if it weren't for this ad, i also wouldn't have created a musical phrase that is very important to me.. which describes the way this kind of music makes you feel.. can't share it though, =P.
prior to this commercial i never knew of Nick Drake or heard any of his songs. The second i saw this commercial i said WHO WAS THAT ?! I thought it was a new singer and i immediately scoured the internet to find out who this brilliant singer might be
No doubt, Drake's "Pink Moon" is the soul of this commerical. But refuse to shake a stick at the artistry that went into filming this. It took the visuals and the music the create this "perfect storm" of soft sentiment that has stuck with many for so many years.
This would not have been effective with just "Pink Moon" playing over some random footage of a road test, or a single shot of a Cabrio.
I stand corrected jaquen, you are right in the sense that the artistry played an integral part of this commercial. The point I was trying to make, and failed, was that the commercial was only the canvas for both the aural and visual artistry. The fact that this was a vw made no difference other than the fact it my have prompted some people to buy a Cabriolet. You could have been subtlely selling condoms and the commercial would hold the same profound sense of relaxation and humility.
