From Adriana Evans Debut Album
"Adriana Evans"

Biography by Jason Ankeny

Alternative R&B singer Adriana Evans was born and raised in San Francisco; her mother, Mary Stallings, was herself a gifted vocalist who sang with Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie and issued a series of fine solo records. At 18, Evans relocated to Los Angeles, befriending aspiring rapper Dred Scott and collaborating on his 1994 album Breakin' Combs. Her own self-titled debut followed on RCA in 1997.

Album Review by Alex Henderson

Despite some jazz and hip-hop touches here and there, Adriana Evans' promising debut album leaves no doubt that her primary inspiration is the sleek "uptown" soul music of the 1970s. Indeed, smooth yet earthy gems like "Heaven," "Looking for Your Love" and "Love Is All Around" sound like they could have been recorded 20 years earlier by the Emotions, Minnie Riperton or Jean Carn. Evans, an expressive and charismatic singer, is the daughter of jazz belter Mary Stallings, and her exposure to jazz has left is mark. The seductive "Reality," in fact, isn't unlike something jazz vibist turned soul and funk singer Roy Ayers would have done in the late '70s. But make no mistake: Evans is an R&B artist first and foremost. In contrast to the homogenized nature of so much of the urban contemporary music recorded in 1997, this CD sounds consistently organic and heartfelt.

  • I had her debut CD years ago and I literally wore it out. The whole CD is off the chain. This lady is underrated. The music market tends to sleep on great talent.

  • This woman has a voice of an angel, truly an underrated GEM!!! Her music is an anomaly (always ahead of it's time and at the same time, timeless), I've been a fan of hers since her debut in 1996. She can do no wrong in my book...I love this sista!

  • @GOTTKGO Right, if u include that. I just found out her and Dred Scott are married. Did u know that/

  • @soulsista1220 well technically, Adriana Evans was out first. She was first featured on Dred Scott's 'Check The Vibe' in '94 (it's on youtube). Scott produced alot of tracks off her first album. Truthfully, alot of her songs sound as if they were his leftover beats. Either way, they made a dope music together.

  • @GOTTKGO Right, and I remember buying either a cd single for "Seein Is Believin" or "Love Is All Around" with snippets on it. Just don't know who was on the radio first.

  • @soulsista1220 'Seeing Is Believing' is on the first album. I can't remember exactly whose single dropped first. If I'm correct, Adriana dropped in the spring/early summer '97. Erykah's album definitely dropped in the spring that year. I remember buying the single for 'On & On' with album snippets on the B-side

  • Was "Seein Is Believin" the first release off of her self-titled debut cd? If it was or wasn't, what month was her first song released. I'm investigating to see if her or Erykah Badu hit the airwaves first. I know it was about the same time.

  • i wish i had this instrumental!!!! XP

  • Great vocals. She's new to me . . . I'm loving it!!

  • ich höre das lied immer wie gesagr ne leute mama soul fielling
