This film is a tribute to the work and play of Harry Partch 1901 - 1974, and his contribution to music theory.

Harry Partch was an American composer and instrument builder. He was one of the first twentieth-century composers to work extensively and systematically with microtonal scales, writing much of his music for custom-made instruments he built himself, tuned in 11-limit just intonation.

Harry Partch remains a somewhat obscure figure, but is well known to experimental musicians (especially those interested in microtonality) and instrument-builders, and is considered by many to be one of the most significant composers of the 20th century.

Harry Partch is famous for his 43-tone scale, even though he used many different scales in his work and the number of divisions is theoretically infinite. Towards the end of his life, Columbia Records made recordings of some of his works, including Delusion of the Fury, which helped in large part to increase public attention to his work.

The stage production of Delusion of the Fury, Directed by John Crawford, can also be seen on this YouTube channel.

Originally conceived in the early 1970s, noted puppeteer, friend and colleague, John Crawford is featured in this video taken over twenty years ago of a puppet instrument he created called "the gut bucket" or "the mother plucker" and is a tribute to their friendship and creativity.

  • Is this old archival footage, or was this done in recent years?

  • @emulatorgeeknes this video was taped over 20 years ago as a record to preserve the memory of this puppet that was originally constructed over 35 years ago by Puppeteer John Crawford to celebrate the work and memory of musician and inventor Harry Partch. Click on the text discription for this video for more information about Harry Partch and musical instruments that he invented.
