Indiana Jones and The Raiders Of The Lost Ark - New 2008 CG

A shot from the classic 1981 film, Indiana Jones and The Raiders of The Lost Ark has been revamped for 2008. In the new version, notice how, during the shot where the truck flies off the cliff, the ravine has more dimension to it as if it were a miniature. Indy's truck is even obscured by one of its ridges as the camera angle changes. In the original, a large matte painting was used which made for a very flat and undynamic shot.

Apparently, this new version of the shot is not available on the newly released DVDs. However, it was included during the recent airings of the trilogy on USA and the Sci-Fi channel.

I think they should release a Indiana jones DVD box-set with the original untouched raiders of the lost ark and a new enhanced version with stuff like the one this video that would be cool but only if they also had the original version.

The original fx shot more closely approximates the contrast and tonal qualities of the footage leading up to it. In all respects, this makes the cut less jarring and helps to sell the shot. My money is on the classic ILMers, not the assembly-line pixel pushers Lucas has masquerading as ILMers of late.

P.S. On September of 2011, the true ILM (operating under the pseudonym Kerner Co. for over 30 years) officially closed its doors forever. Sad news for movie fans the world over. Thanks, George.

FYI the new shot has been removed and the old one restored in it original state. I saw this at the 30th anniversary screening last night with Spielberg. That new shot has been thrown out.
