hi, in case you didnt find a solution yet:

1. Make your selection

2. Copy / Paste it (right there, just like, strg+c, strg+v)

(Now you should have the selection in your "Layers" windows)

3. Select the selection (^^) in the layers window, either right click it and choose "New Layer" or just use the new layer button on the bottom of the window.
