The West Somerset Railway's Mixed Traction Gala once again recalled the classic modern traction of Diesel Hydraulics that reigned the Western Region of BR from the late 1950's to the late 1970's.
The gala was dominated with a feast of Maybach music, it also marked the return of Class 52 Western D1010 Western Campaigner after a 3 year absence. The weather for the first two days of the gala was to be scorching hot but none the less beautifull.

In this film is a full round up of all the Diesel Hydraulics filmed during Friday 11th to Saturday 12th June. From the Westerns, Warships to the Hymek and Class 14s. The Hymek was repainted into BR two-tone green as part of GWR 175. However the Hymek failed during the first day of the gala but was repaired for the next day.

Locos included in the film:

Class 52 Western D1010 'Western Campaigner'
Class 52 Western D1062 'Westen Courier''
Class 42 Warship D832 'Onslaught'
Class 42 Warship D821 'Greyhound' (temporarily renamed 'Chris Broadhurst 1956 - 2008')
Class 35 Hymek D7017
Class 14s D9520 & D9526

Please note: all lineside shots were taken by permission of the WSR as I own a linesiders pass.

  • Always been fascinated by the western region hydraulics. I'm too young and live in the wrong part of the country to have any memories of them in service. The Westerns have to be one of the most good looking locos in BR history. I loved the various liveries they had in the 1960s too.

  • @Kylebound26 Its very reasonable for anyone outside WR territory to admire hydraulics. I have a perfect excuse in admiring them for all sorts of reasons, the sight, sounds, designs and their distinctive designs are what made the WR really independent like the GWR before them.

  • you should be filming for the bbc

  • @kevleisa I wish!

  • Nice to see the action viewed from the trackside!

  • Ah yes and something different too seeing as I havn't seen as much action from the trackside.
