  • I think what Dawkins meant by posing the question if there is another truth other than a scientific one was more about diminishing/dismissing the possibility of a spiritual truth or a supernatural truth - that "truths" are things that you can prove with evidence or reason of some sort.

Now of course, no one saw me scratching my nose the last minute (or so I hope), but I still consider it to be the truth even though it's hard to prove.

  • @Gustavberntsson

That's kind of the problem, all he's doing is espousing materialism, though I doubt that he knows what that is.

  • @Gustavberntsson This is a perfect example of Dawkins's frequent misuse and misunderstanding of terms. What he likely meant was "material" truth. Dawkins in fact claimed that Moral truths might not be "truths" at all, why? because they aren't based on material, empirical eviedence.

  • You seemed to go a bit sidetracked here: I think that Dawkins means that a truth can only be a fact in evidence. If your truth is not a fact in evidence, then you don't KNOW it. (know it , show it) Mathematical proofs are not truely scientific in that they don't use the scientific method, they are facts in evidence. Your memory is a bad example because not only can it be altered or erased (you have to find the right molecules) it is also very untrust worthy, as is IMO black and white morality.

  • @deathmetal931 Maybe that's just the problem. Christians like myself don't see, say the 'god' of the bible the same way you do. So for example, I would disagree with that statement, but that's just how i see it. my interpretation is as much dependent on my personality, what books i've read, personal experience etc etc as yours is. We shouldn't be surprised when we come up with such differing opinions!

  • @deathmetal931 who is Sam?

  • @deathmetal931 I'm Roman Catholic, i don't understand what you mean by morality "from an evolutionists point of view." I think that's akin to saying morality "from a Botanists point of view", neither one are prescriptive moral philosophies.

  • @255ad And allows that there may be moral truths or maybe not. The question he poses to the host, albeit a rhetorical one, just puts the ball in the court of those claiming there are other truths to consider when talking about the nature of physical reality. What are they and how do we discuss them and how do they qualify the fruits of scientific discovery?
