This isn't about storytelling. This is about every creative endeavor. All young creators need to hear this message.

it might be common knowledge, but few can articulate it as well as he just did.

I think you missed the whole point here. Making crap is normal because the definition of normal is something that occurs on a regular basis across a wide range of examples or situations. It IS normal because we DO produce crap, the whole point is we set ourselves high standards and then call our work crap and strive to do better. The point is not to give up when you've started that journey but not yet reached your goal, that is the 'gap' that he talks about which we need to overcome.

Well, he did have quite a few resources and all the time in the world to decide what to say before recording this, right?

All you need to teach them to succeed is it's not what you know but who you know.

Seems like an ad for unpaid interns. What is so normal about producing crap? Maybe their standards are just too low. I think few students want anything but praise for their work and are not open to criticism. He brags about his show and awards and then humbles himself by saying he wasn't always great? Old recording just proves he now values form over content. He's mastered making the way you use your voice in telling story more important than the story. It is all so rehearsed. He's a Pied Piper.
