Mercy Now - Mary Gauthier

"The song came through me, not from me". This is what Mary Gauthier (pronounced "go-shay") folk/country singer, songwriter said when talking about the song "Mercy Now". Having had a great deal of darkness and tribulation in her life, this song starts with parts of herself and progresses to include the world.

From the album "Mercy Now" (2005), My interpretation of the lyrics are far-reaching as opposed to a solely personal expression on Gauthier's part. The fact that this can be done shows her lyrics as being adaptable to a multitude of life's dark and turbulent side. She adds that "it is a song that covers a sense of forgiveness". (Quotes are from an NPR interview in March, 2005)

i heard this song on a gospel radio station it touched my heart & bless the singer who said this song wasnt from her but thru her~id say she knows a lil about mercy~beautiful and hopeful words in a hopeless world of sufferings~bless you MARY i love your song~DD

This is a beautiful song. The keening violin, the lyrics, the acoustic picking, it's all as close to perfect as a song can get. The only thing that improves it is your wonderful slide show that add a heart wrenching visual that can nearly tear a heart in two. Thanks for sharing this plea which should become a prayer from all of us.

I had this song sent to me and have been playing it since. The world is so dark and gloomy and we all need some mercy. I wish the whole world could hear this song,and make a difference. I love her voice and a very great song writer. Bless you.

I heard this on the PBS Masterpiece Theatre show with Brodie James as a PI. They played it in the show and at the ending. I had to find it on you tube. Its so haunting and beautiful.
