You can mark the borders with Canny. And then select the contours. Then for each boundary will be two contours - one outside (it will be distorted by background) and inner (will not be distorted by the background).

how do u make it accurate, disregarding the background?
i am currently doing similar project which uses contour..im having trouble in identifying the object because of the background. ill be grateful for any help. :)
