With French lyrics and English translation. This is a popular French song about people dancing on the bridge Saint Benezet in Avignon, France. It's often used for children's creative dancing, expressing possible dancing styles of various people in the song. Special thanks to ChrisO for photos of Avignon bridge, and Clipartheaven.com for dancing graphics.

    Shouldn't the translation be:

On the bridge OF Avignon one is dancing there? l'on y danse.

I had pondered on this when translating, but decided on the word "IN" instead of "OF", because "OF" seems to imply the name of the bridge, but the bridge is named Saint Benezet. "IN" indicates location. I would like to ask viewers for opinions on this, it's fun to learn new things and exchange ideas. Thanks for viewing and posting comment.

If this song is modified slightly, it makes an excellent Napoleonic march tune

I heard the name today come on a quiz show, it sounded slightly familiar so looked it up to see what Sur le pont d Avignon was - It is a nice cheerful litle song :)

If this song is sung in a slow, hollow, half amused, half crazed voice, it sounds creepy as hell.
