Terezin was the concentration camp where Hitler sent most of the notable creative Jews of the time: painters, poets, musicians, composers, actors, authors and singers. However, despite the Nazi's evil intensions and in the face of imminent death, these giants in the field of art, music, and culture forever touched the lives of countless others, especially the children in the camp.
This clip is from a chapter of the documentary dedicated to "Brundibar", a legendary children's opera that was performed 55 times in the Terezin concentration camp. At first, the opera was rehearsed in total secrecy, but when the Nazis learned of its existence, they chose to make it a propaganda showpiece and forced the Jews to perform it to the Red Cross. The concentration camp was cosmetically "spruced up" for the occasion, to resemble a "town Hitler had given the Jews" and the Red Cross delegates were wined and dined during the "festivities." The fate of the Children of Brundibar was sealed when the Red Cross delegation departed through the gates of Terezin...
