Nicanor - Full Brother to Barbaro - 1st Race Announced

Nicanor who is a full brother to Barbaro will have his first race on Sat. 1/31/09 at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Edgar Prado will be the jockey.

Post Time is about 4:30 PM EST. A 1 mile maiden race. Nicanor drew the 4th post position out of 12 horses.

From Prado.

"He (Nicanor) is better than that, said his jockey, Edgar Prado. Ive worked him in the mornings, and he showed me a lot. He broke really fast and unfortunately grabbed his left quarter. Well just have to see how long it takes to heal, but I know hes better than that".

After suffering the injury, Nicanor wasnt comfortable, so Edgar just wrapped up on him, said the colts trainer, Michael Matz.

I read that Nicanor also got bumped right after the start. He was in last place but then he took off like a rocket and moved up very fast passing other horses like they were standing still untill he got to 4th or 5th place then he dropped back. But Nicanor did a great job of weaving in and out and manuvering around other horses. Nicanor is big and fast and his breeding should provide the stanima to go the distance in the future.

So unlucky he lost but it was just his frist race

he could be better than the turf

Trainer Matz was considering a turf race on 2/7/09 at Gulfstream for Nicanor's debut but they feel Nicanor can run on all 3 surfaces, turf, dirt and synthetic (like he trained on in Maryland).

Personally I believe he should have been started on the turf. I am trying to find out why he was started in a one mile dirt race other than maybe they wanted him to know what it was like to get dirt thrown in his face. Barbaro was on the turf 3 times before he went to dirt.

"He had exhorted extra energy after the break just staying on his feet. He had sprinted, showing good speed, to make up a dozen lengths that he had spotted the field in the first one-fourth and he had been unyielding to Prado's attempt to relax and rate him the whole way.

Now he was tired and out of air...and beside that...his foot hurt."

"Nicanor showed fearlessness as he ran up into the tight quarters of the leading flight. A trait that can't be taught.

Into fifth position now and just three lengths off the leaders at the half-mile marker. They had made up a dozen lengths on the field. Briefly they had to steady. Prado guided Nicanor off the rail from behind horses, finding him a scrap of daylight.'

"Nicanor recovered nicely from the tumultuous break and hit his stride. Prado had his hands full moving up the back stretch. His colt was full of run. Taking a good hold on Nicanor and standing high in the stirrups, he eased Nicanor to the rail as the bay colt continued pulling him along, picking up horses regardless of the strangle hold. Nicanor was wanting to do more. A trait that can't be taught.
