  • As with my own 'liveset' it's only as live as it gets... For someone who doens't understand how an MPC works it looks like you aren't doing anything... I do this with an APC40, triggering loops, filtering stuff in and out, adding delays, etc.

BUT it sounds great, and that's all the audience is interested in. A little repetitive though but that's common in club-music. Nice work!

  • @se7ense7 thanks for the response! my attempt was to create a techno set only using the mpc. the prefix 'live' was used to stress that this is neither a dj set nor prerecorded songs. but i think it needs a profound discussion on what 'live' electronic music is more than ever before. refering to sutherland's definition, a mpc (and of course the apc) is NO live instrument AT ALL even if you'd play all the samples yourself:

  • @se7ense7 "Live electronic music generally utilizes instrumental or electronic sounds but excludes those that have been prerecorded" (wiki: Live_electronic_music). I sometimes make fun of musicians doing nothing more than triggerin loops myself but i think it's another quality using such a limited device like the mpc than a laptop with all the possibilities. anyway, i see your point! so, how whould you define 'live' electronic music? ;)

  • @barkipa I wouldn't define triggering loops with either laptop or other hardware as live. It's a liveset instead of a dj-set.

What I do with 'a journey of Jen' is totally live electronic music. We use 2 laptops (ableton) and we each have a hardware synth wich is feeded into ableton for looping what we play, live on the spot. We don't re-record ANYTHING and we do hour-long livesets (jams). You should check it out: a journey of Jen (on soundcloud and somewhere on youtube)

  • @se7ense7 i think you didn't get the point. as i said, i don't define triggering loops as live EITHER (i tried to explain why i used the term, anyway) BUT: according to the definition EVERY sampler on the world will never be allowed to be used on a live situation, even a mpc played with the skills of a guy as araabmuszik whoud not be counted as 'live'. i think this is not what 'live' is aiming at. this is why i asked you for a better definition. and not how you whouldN'T define live.

  • by the way: stay calm. in different other projects i'm playing bended keyboards, the guitar, toys, etc. and looping it with a foot controller connected to ableton, aswell. it makes a lot of fun improvising for hours! but don't act like its special operations, dude. it's no hard trick.

  • @barkipa Lol... I think you don't get that I totally agree with you. I just elaborated on the matter. Playing any studio-track 'live' is conceptually challenging, because you need to have at least 10 hands. Working with loops is an easy way to have SOME control over what's happening... Sometimes it's just frustrating. Happy knobbing!
