The biggest secret behind Tom's sustain is in the pick ups. They are Seymour Duncan Metal Live Wires.
I use the same ones in my guitar and they RULE! The sustain never stops!

gain, compression, heavy gauge string (maybe), heavy woods on the guitar...

it's not EMG's, they're carvin's passive pickups with the active tone controls, you can tell from the switches and the pickups. He's probably got a compressor or something on. I may be wrong, but i'm 99% sure of the pickups.
