todays adventure with Gordon Tindall
We have all of the tree huggers and elected officials looking at this underground burning coal for yeas. Have they tried
to extract energy to make power ? What a site for a greenhouse!
Jan 21st, 2008
Dear Editor,

Thanks to the generosity of Gordon Tindall of the Red Rose Diner, I was driven to Centralia, Pa. today and felt the hot ground temperatures where smoke was escaping. Centralia is a now ghost town. It is a victim to an underground coal fire. It is sad that most of the people had to be moved. It is sadder that not one BTU appears to being used for something positive. They have had 45 years to come up with something other than saying the sky is falling.
I find that the lack of any process to capture this heat to do something positive very sad.
Society should be making lemonade out of the lemons the good people of Centralia have been handed.
If our engineers can not come up with some positive use of this "free" energy then we deserve to be doomed
into extinction. Where are the elected officials and Gov. Rendell in either heating some green houses, or running heat engines to pump electricity
back into the grid? Hell, you could raise talapia there and grow food all winter long! The possibilities are almost limitless.
However it is plain to me that our government hampers progress and does not encourage it.

And I don't hear any major presidential candidates talking about the dangers of paper less ballots or eminent domain abuse. I don't hear any candidate pushing for the raising of industrial hemp to help reduce pollution in making paper. Bush wants to give us money back so that we can buy more crap from China and make them even stronger? Have China pay to feed their own damn Panda bears!

Mr. Bush we need farming, mining or manufacturing jobs right here in the USA. We don't need more retail stores!!!!

Sincerely,
Joseph Rene Dupont

  • Maybe you should start asking, how many mines in America are burning..? You'll be surprised.

  • Get your frying pan out next time and fry some eggs that way it wont be wasted.

  • Wells. State resources should go to enough wells in the region to pump/disperse enough subsurface water to extinguish coal fires. This is around the world a massive, stupid emission of CO2 greenhouse gas, 1., and 2. a wastage of carbon resources for 'no return' beyond the destruction of the environment.

  • I know this is like 6 months after your comment, but I just gotta say.

You're making fun of him for replying a month late, but you replied to his original comment 3 months later, so you're one to talk...

  • while, just responding to something we wrote a month ago.. way to stay current there zep.. and we all see your ass, its kind of hard to miss...might think of a good diet and some exercise.. and lay off the twinkies.. good luck...

  • Hippie. giffe00 is right. y'all need to buy the land and plant your communes on it. Since when do hippies embrace the internet, anyway?? Get a good look at my ass corysmolly?

  • you are a simple person zep and when you talk your ass shows...

  • you idiot hippies and liberals don't want coal burned for energy. this guy is in the bush/cheney lets use all the fossil fuels we can and screw the air and greenhouse gasses rule camp.. hippies and liberals want to run stuff off of urine and fart and hemp.. you fool this dude is a conservative not a hippie..

  • To fiik420:

Maybe they can find some place far enough away to put the building where it won't fall in, and then run pipes to it. But then subsidance of the ground breaks the pipes? And how hot is the fire anyway? Coal burns hot enough for blacksmithing? So put the pipes "near" the fire, then they are soon in the fire?

I don't hear of many volcanos tapped for energy, so if it was feasible, wouldn't somebody be doing it already? Too many better sources of energy it would appear

    Can't control it

  • To IIIJFRIII:

Couldn't it be, that there's actually way too much other cheap energy or coal, that trying to tap a fire already under the ground, just isn't feasible? How? Maybe a really long extension cord will do the trick?

Seems the affordable solution is to move on, and mine coal nearby or elsewhere, before it burns too.

Who's the hippie? I'm very conservative and very pro-life and pro-population

Cost-benefit consideration, tells us it's probably better to let below ground fires grow wild
