Rule 1: Find 2 big objects 7 miles apart;
Rule 2: Put your camera 5 miles away from the closest one; and 12 miles away from the farthest one so that they are almost in a straight line.

Shoot some footage (about a minute, or so), and upload it to Youtube.

Send me a message with the video link.
I'll keep a playlist of Challenge videos on my front page.

Any objects will do: bridges, buildings, Dams, mountain peaks; anything.

Document your camera position by panning to the ground beneath your helicopter before your long shot.

Include the addresses of both objects and your camera position. I'll check the distances with a map.

Deadline is July 31 at 11:45 PM, Eastern Daylight Time.

There is no prize. This is not a competition. This is an investigation into the technological capabilities of helicopter-camera photography. This is for educational purposes only!

If you think the shot is impossible, PLEASE write an essay explaining in detail why you think it is impossible, post your essay on your company's website, and send me a link to it. I promise to read all submissions.

I understand that helicopter photography is one of the most expensive activities in the world. The more time put into planning the shot, the less the shot will cost (fuel, labor, time).

Thank you and Good Luck!

  • The network i work for is about to get a new camera on our helicopter almost identical to the one used by the tv networks in new york and i'd be happy to take up your ridiculous challenge... what exactly is it you want me to do? be 7 miles away and film buildings so you can see how steady it is?

  • @jcannon87 Okay! Thanks! What city are you in, and I'll think of somethhing. In short, we need you 5 miles away from something tall, and 7 miles beyond that also something tall; such that you are 12 miles away from the second tall thing. But if you tell me what city you are in, I will set something up.

  • Hi, shitstinx! I just saw your Mike Walter piece and subbed your channel! Good work.

We can confirm the helicopter's location in the archives; the TV choppers were told to be 5 miles away from the WTC.

"is the shot impossible?" That's what I'd like to know! How much zoom does camera lens have? Enough to pull a bridge pillar close enough to see the graffiti on it?

Do you know anything about that?

  • I'm sure the helicopter was "drifting" eastward, toeg1. Maybe you would call that "left".

If you watch the area to the right of the Towers you'll see some Brooklyn moving, as well. In other words, the camera is flying in a clockwise direction around the Towers.

  • Please read the description information for further details on how to participate in the Helicopter Challenge. Thanks!!!

  • See this video, a computer simulation from a former believer that thought the "moving bridge" was faked.

    Read his description too...

  • how do u know the location of the helicopter on 911? what have you used to identify and confirm the heli's location? im not doubting you, im just wondering.

also, im not sure i understand what you're saying. is the shot impossible? if so, why?

  • Very interesting challenge, Yougene. I have a question. Do we know if the helicopter from the video was moving to its right as well?
