It's depressing to think that most of my generation will go through life thinking Justin Bieber's horrible noises are music : (
I wish people my age would listen to Woody Guthrie more often and Bob Dylan.
I pray that in the future music will go back to real music like this...if that makes sense.
R.I.P. Woody Guthrie

Hope t' meet you in those pastures of plenty one day, Woody...

@electric23sand "One of the most important things that Woody ever taught me and a lot of other people was that you could have a combination of the best of the old and the new: It didn't have to be all one or the other, you could mix 'em up." - Pete Seeger, performing at Wolftrap with Arlo Guthrie.

Woody Guthrie exemplifies true American culture - Americans were all pretty much farmers and folk who depeded on the land long ago - and its in are identity and blood to relate to this music cause it's us at are purest - non - party affiliating - freedom loving - lovers of the land.

I first heard Pastures via Holly Near and Ronny Gilbert and have to say I prefer the drama of their version, plus they seem to bring out the melody more. No beating Woody though.

Yeah well most people in Woody's time listened to crap pop music instead of him.

Frankly I like the John McCutcheon version better.

@tasedlak That would be great if that stuff got republished. In the book they definitely mention his "Woody Sez" stuff along with his writings in "People's World". They mention some of his flaws like womanizing too. I've been a Guthrie fan for a while but as of late I've really started to appreciate him more than I ever have. Always good to see that there are others out there who still see his importance...even if there aren't as many of us as I would like.
is it just me or does woody change the phrasing according to his whim? maybe i'm not counting it right, but it seems a little chaotic where he places the phrases. is this like his other songs too?

Yep, you're right. Your comment reminds me of his track Tom Joad Part II from Dust Bowl Ballads, which I should have on youtube. Guthrie plays the notes without words at one point to remember them. He was notorious for rarely playing a song the same way twice.

I'd recommend reading Bound for Glory. Bob Dylan said it left more of an impression on him than On the Road. After reading Bound for Glory, I shut the movie off before five minutes passed. Carradine doesn't even look like Guthrie. I guess it's supposed to be good, but it can't compare with the book.

@tasedlak Have you read the new book "Woody Guthrie: American Radical"? I just started it and it seems pretty good so far. I've already learned a couple things I didn't know. It focuses on his left wing politics. Bound For Glory is great and definitely better than the movie.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I put it on the list of books to have the local shop order for me.
I hope that my press, TPKF Publishing, will in 2012 republish Guthrie's 'Woody Sez,' a collection of his writings he produced for a socialist paper.
Thanks for your interest in Guthrie. I wish the whole country listened to him!
