As in civil society, where there must necessarily be checks and balances on freedom of expression, cells have evolved a range of mechanisms to regulate the expression of their constituent genes. This video presentation, an accompaniment to Science's 28 March 2008 special issue on gene regulation highlights the central role of RNA in gene regulation. Features interviews with John Mattick (University of Queensland), Stephen Buratowski (Harvard Medical School), and Science's Guy Riddihough.

  • So regulation of gene expression plays a central role in the development of a unicellular zygote into a multicellular organism?

Also do genes determine the nucleotide sequences of specific mRNA molecules?

  • Yes, genes have all the information in them, but whether they are turned on or off is part of the regulation that scientists are really learning about now. Environmental factors play a role, but it's more like nature dancing with nurture (each taking the lead from time to time), rather than nature versus nurture.

  • this is cool

  • haters gonna hate....even when your talking about genetics lol

  • @ScienceMag I always hope discussions can be open and enlightening as well as lively! I guess it's hard for some to have an open discussion with someone who disagrees with them without using attacks or name-calling. Good luck with whatever you do, Howie. Cheers!

  • @ashley5mith @Howie47 So glad this is generating such a lively discussion, but please keep it civil.

  • @ashley5mith Even E.T. has it's mitochondrial Adam and Eve. Actually Creation theory far better fits the unravelling evidences; then the just so materialist fairy tales. My caustic criticism isn't aimed as much at science as it is the system that has hijacked science. Do you really want to understand me? I think you just want to handle me! Concerning many honest assumptions, your science is a closed book. Or more appropriately, a frozen book.

  • @Howie47 In science there is always room for new ideas and improvement, but I don't think vitriol has any place in it! I wonder, what is your background that you understand evo. theory, and what has led to your animosity towards it? I would like to understand you, but even with my admittedly basic understanding, the arguments against natural selection that I have read seem patchy and sometimes contextually misleading. The only explanation more elegant than Ev. theory is Adam and Eve!

  • @ashley5mith "Your education"? Oopsie, you mean your indoctrination! Which you have swallowed, hook, line and sinker! Read between their lines, if you want to ferret out the truth. Other wise your just sucking up their tautology! Oh I understand their bull shit all to well. Let the blind lead the blind. You're both headed for a ditch. Maybe you could put the theory of evolution here in a single post? As Einstein suggested. Any theory worth it's salt, can be elegantly summarized.

  • @Howie47 Oopsie! Now correct me if I'm wrong, but based on that second article, it seems you are some strange sort of creationist? I thought you took issue with the term "evolution", but you it seems you take issue (and grossly misunderstand) the entire theory! I take it back- My education has served me quite well, thank you!!
