This happened, and the reason I know is because it happened to ME. In July, 1963, I took the NOVICE EXAM and passed both the 5wpm CODE and the WRITTEN... and then we moved to another state without a clue where we were going to live.
As I said, I put the School's Address down on the FCC Form, so when my OPERATOR (ONLY) LICENSE came, they forwarded it to me (this was September, 1963 by then).
2008-1963 is 45 years ago, and my NOVICE Operator License was without a Station License.
Today, I still keep my ADVANCED CLASS STATION LICENSE, just to prove that I really did get up to at least 12wpm MORSE CODE SPEED. I actually got up to 17wpm, but got stuck and never was able to get up to 20wpm.
After the FCC dropped the MORSE CODE requirement completely, I just forgot about the whole thing.
I think even SHIP RADIO OFFICERS no longer exist on US SHIPS, so CW is kind of going away. Only very few people left (like Elaine) who can and do still do it.
I put down the School Address for an address, so when the License arrived, the School forwarded it to me at my new address. I was so proud of it, that I used Scotch Tape to completely cover it in plastic to protect it. That was a Big Mistake, only I did not know it would later ruin it.
Well, the Scotch Tape did ruin the document, so I had to throw it away. You cannot get a replacement for something that expires and is non-renewable, so I have no physical evidence it ever existed.
In fact, I only got an OPERATOR LICENSE, never a STATION LICENSE (the one with your Station Call Letters), because we were moving, and I did not know to where... so I had to leave it blank.
I think I am the ONLY person who that ever happened to, and everyone I tell this to says I am a LIAR... that they NEVER heard of such a thing that someone got a Ham Radio License WITHOUT the Station Call Letters.
At night when the sun sets, the earth's atmosphere changes. Ionized layers (excited by the sun) combine and rise up, creating a mirror for 40-Meter Radio signals to bounce back to earth for long distance travel around the world. It can hop and bounce many times.
Very interesting, once someone shows and explains to you how it works. I love it!
We were so poor, after I got my Novice License, I never got on the air. After 1 year, it expired.
