I'm fairly sure it prompts you for a filename when you start it. Just make sure to use 8.3 filename format.

If it's longer than 8 letters, then it is not 8.3. 8.3 is "xxxxxxxx.yyy", so something like "zelda.gbc" should work.
Also, make sure you're using the DX version, as the black and white one won't work.

If you pay attention, things are actually getting deleted to make free space for new objects. Pay attention to the "##/##" counter: "used space"/"free space".
