For years, SETI - The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - has scoured the heavens for signals to no avail. Surprising, because by all accounts they ought to be abundant in our galaxy. The author, looking to the Force of Nature as his guide, suggests a chilling alternative.

  • I reckon you are not far from the truth. If you transpose the timescale of our species existing 'here' with technological advances and scientific discovery I'd like to ask you what your opinion is in where on the ladder do YOU think we are ?

In graphical terms the plot would look exponential, so, where-abouts do YOU think we are on THAT curve ? Scaling it to suit, we could either be at the first increment with a lot to learn or up near the top, where the plot leaves the board ! I'll reply...lol!

  • @dividebyN Gosh! Good question. I guess I have more of a wish than an educated opinion on that. I think I'd like to be near the bottom :-)

  • Wow, cool.. never thought of the purpose of sentience in that way before. With regards for us not picking up any signals, IMHO with don't have the right tools to pickup those signals yet. I highly doubt that an spacefaring civilization would be using anything on the EM spectrum for communication. There is tons of active research in using neutrinos for communication, perhaps ET's use a similar method?

  • @accd1d Agreed. Personally, I frequent contribute to SETI's existence. The point of my essay is Occam's Razor-esque: Until further information is forthcoming, the explanation of this video presently fits the present data.

  • Don't be too despondent, clemstevenson. Pure speculation, but the conciliation I glean from this is that perhaps galaxies are like eggs and sentience is akin to sperm. As with our own nature, only one of the plethora make it to the egg. In our galaxy there is always a chance it could be Mankind - after all every one of us glorious individuals have won that astounding lottery. While we live, there is always a chance.

  • Or maybe the so called 'human' mind is not indigenous to Earth and is just a parasitic and destructive organism that is using out consciousness for its own ends. Come on scientists with your over educated (read trained) limited thinking, its time to get off of the pot.

  • @StephenPGoodfellow : Interesting reply ! Given that we've continued to harness the properties of electrons for a couple of hundred years and communication has evolved into a global phenomenon via the net, it still TOOK us a few hundred years to get that/(this!)! I'd also like to think we are near the lower end of that scale, though I think it will be a lonnnnnnnnng time before we confirm life elsewhere. It WILL happen though ! (imho)!!! It depends where we are on the scale though !

    Cheers !

  • I do believe you are right! Yet...

What ever we could achieve in the lets just say 1 million years before we were passed in physical being on our spaceships, waiting for the evolution of life to catch up with itself. Would the preservation of previous information collected in space and the knowledge one can draw form experience.

Interesting case to study the human and its existence by a new terrestrial species!Or maybe I am just protecting myself as an individual. Resistence is futile:)

  • Poor humans; alone in the universe, and predestined to extinction. As there is clearly nothing in this process for me, I'd say that I was correct in not bothering to have any children.

  • Got it. Facinating. Thanks. JE
