This song has always been a secret favourite of mine. I've met very few people who are familiar with it, as it was a song that was part of a film soundtrack to a movie called FRIENDS (1971.) I've yet to see the film, but I became familiar with the song when I purchased Elton John's RARE MASTERS double cd, back in 1992. I fell in love with the song then and there. The song's inclusion on the HEART live album, THE ROAD HOME (produced and arranged by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones) from 1995 was the main reason why I picked up that album too, just to see how the gals would approach the song. (Pick it up. It's worth it.)
Elton and Bernie have written some amazing pop songs over the years, songs that have become standards, but I truly believe some of their lesser-known songs, like Seasons, Come Down In Time, Harmony, We All Fall In Love Sometimes, Goodbye, Tonight, Empty Garden, Believe and I Want Love need to be covered and played and exposed to a wider audience. In my opinion, those songs sit very comfortably within the pantheon, right along side Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Tiny Dancer and Bennie And The Jets. If I ever met Elton, I would implore him to put those songs into his touring setlist. I don't know if he's ever played Seasons live. He should. (Then I'd grill him on working with Paul Buckmaster, his orchestral arranger in the early years!) ;-)
My keyboard barely held together for this performance. Clack clack clack. I want a real piano damn it! Screw this recession! Oh well. A man can dream.
Oh by the way, if you're a music fan, you have to check out SPECTACLE, the new television program Elton John executive produces, with Elvis Costello in conversation with various songwriters. There are very few (if any) programs on the air right now that delve so deeply into the craft of songwriting. Well worth checking out, on the Sundance Channel in the states, and on CTV here in Canada. There are several clips from the show here as well on YouTube. We need to support programs like these. End of plug!
