While this might not interest most people, this is a silent video about the outward appearance of one of my headaches. So far, the general practitioner and ER doctors believe that these headaches are caused by what is known as Trigeminal Neuralgia. It has been recommended that I see a neurologist next, however, my current situation prevents this.

At first--since I also have had migraine headaches for some time--I assumed these sensations were simply new symptoms to an old problem.

From what I've read about the subject, it would seem that my symptoms fall under atypical TN due to the length of time each episode lasts and persistence of "residual" symptoms in between attacks.

This particular headache began several minutes before I started filming and, like most of these episodes, has several stages. First a mild burning or aching pain either in my jaw or back of my neck appears and the skin on the right side (always) of my face becomes very sensitive. Next, I begin experiencing stinging, shooting pains from my ear to my mouth and inside of my right nostril.

This is when the fun starts. Ranging from being repeatedly beaten about the head with a baseball bat or crowbar (i've actually felt this) to what feels like a series of twisted metal coathangers randomly being electrified inside my face dominate for the next several minutes.

Finally, what I call the resolution stage is where massage type pain and physical manipulation of my face seems to help subdue the larger more dominant sensations.

  • tnx for the link. i have been experimenting with binaural beats; i've been using the program bwgen32. the biggest problem i've been encountering is how seemingly random the actual moments of pain are. it is difficult to reduce it to a problem of pattern and frequency.

  • Wow. Watching this all the way through was incredible. The silence made it so... aarggh I can't think of a word for it but it definitely caught my attention for the full ten minutes. When it was over I realized so many thoughts went through my head while watching. What is the effect of a cigarette on your headaches? I'll stay tuned.

  • i usually feel that if i can get myself to smoke, i can sort of zone into the process of smoking. my addiction to nicotine seems to be one of the only "normal" thoughts or sensations i can concentrate on.

  • had to have surgery. they drilled a hole in my head and i have had problems with depression ever since. but i guess i was depressed before then as well. doctors wont even give anything to help for headaches. i mean strong opiates are the only things that seem to help me. but doctors are so worried about prescribing anything good cause of the DEA. they give you anything for these headaches?

  • percocets and tegretol but the percocets do absolutely nothing other than make me feel like a bag of jelly with a lot of pain and i refuse to take an anticonvulsant until i've had a full neurological evaluation -- even then i'm leery.

i can imagine how anyone having these types of problems will become depressed or feel an increased sense of depression, especially once surgery is involved.
