@TheShadowrider81 just wondering......so in theory would it be best to have the oldest and most primitive car you could get. I mean would something like a 1965 chevy.......or even better a car with a crank up starter option?
-
@breezebro good point.....motorcycle or ..........very small car

if you have the chassis of the car grounded the car itself can act as a sort of faraday cage, protecting it's own electronics. This could possibly work with a modern vehicle, if it is not made of a lot of plastic like cars these days especially if stored in a metal building which has a good ground.

What he is trying to say is that this vehicle has no semiconductors/integrated circuitry required to run the engine. If he had his hood open when the emp struck then there would be a slim possibility of an alternator or solenoid frying. I myself never owned a diesel but is it possible to kick (push) start it?

Not totally true, friend. That wire to the injection pump solenoid must be energized for the pump to inject fuel. If you have no power this engine will not run. Solving that, you could "catch it in gear" by coasting down a hill as long as it's not too cold. BTW you didn't address the glow plugs issue either.
On the plus side almost any flammable liquid will run in here... But don't try gasoline tho.
From a VW Diesel lover...

What about the alternator/generator, starter and battery???

With all the cars stalled everywhere, clogging up the roads, how you gonna go anywhere?
Where you gonna go? No stores will be open cause they couldn't get to work.
It seems like a motorcycle would be a better choice to got to a BOL.

I have the same engine except in an 85 golf. I have tanken mine through some trails and swamp that 4 x 4's get stuck in but I would personally choose a vehicle with a bit more beef and ground clearance as you might not be driving on smooth roads. If i had to leave it would be in a 89 f350 super duty, 7.3 idi diesel 5 spd. 9,000 lbs (empty) of get out of my way. it is capable of holding 5,000 lbs of water, fuel, food, amo, along with the ability to pull a trailer (maybe with the golf on it).

No, pocket does not realize it. Anything conducting current can be destroyed. Just a matter of emp strength.

EMP does not only mean destruction of sensitive electronics, it means, given strong enough field and close range, the frying of wires and the wires need not be in a loop.
I have a cover I just don't use it.
