但到了1941年1月《台灣愛國婦人新報․112號》，莎央已變 成當地的「女子青年團副團長」。到了《理蕃之友․117號》，落 水時的莎央手裡還多了一面日本國旗。

1941年5月，在台灣的日籍畫家鹽月桃甫，特別為莎央作畫。6 月，哥倫比亞唱片公司灌製由詩人西条八十作詞、古賀正男作曲，紅­ 歌星渡辺はま子演唱的〈サヨンの鐘〉，立刻風行全台。

原曲係 1941 年日本老歌サヨンの鐘 (莎央之鐘), 古賀政男作曲。

莎央是台灣原住民少女，1938年9月27日在風雨中被當局徵召­ ，背著將入伍的日本老師田北正記的行李下山，經過武塔南溪的獨木 橋時墜河失蹤。兩天後的《台灣日日新報》，標題只是「蕃婦跌落溪 中，行方不明」。
