At Seventeen

by New Waver

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for footy kings
And rich-boy bands with poor-boy slogans
And physically superior bogans
To parties I was never asked
Friday night sex in cars
Was only for the popular
At seventeen I learned the truth

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in social status
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say hang out with me
And whispered vague obsenities
We went through lots of sheets at seventeen

In failed attempts at teen romance
We got beat up at high school dances
Picked at pimples, tried to tan
And fled before the panel vans
Escaping to the middle class
We sat alone in uni bars
The culture club's also for stupids
The status-challenged learn computers

Adults say to win the game
Forget the love you hope to gain
Study hard and do your homework
That's the way to fill your phone book
But in the end the love you make
Is equal to the heads you break
And your ability to take at seventeen

To those who never learned to fight
Who stayed at home on Friday nights
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for school football
The hardest puncher gets the prize
The meek inherit nine-to-five
And nice girls naturally select
The best competers they can get

We work at shit jobs all our lives
So glamour boys can fuck our wives
Confident there'll be no need
To raise the product of their seed
We drown our sorrows at the pub
While they're on stage tuning up
The pecker order's sorted out at seventeen

  • that woman is janis ian. be good

  • can someone tell me who sang the original of this song i want to download it, i know its a woman

  • New Waver, the only band that TISM fear.

Fond memories of those little "Because of entropy, your life is worthless, mere genetic automatons, we are literally better off dead" fliers handed out at gigs.

Not so fond memories of the singer buck naked on stage though LOL

  • That's a good song.
