Northumbria University - School of Law, won the ultimate accolade of National Training Awards 2010 'Winner of the Year' in the Providing Education and Training category at the UK Ceremony held at Old Billingsgate, London.
Northumbria University School of Law developed an initiative as part of the Law degree for its students to gain hands-on experience of real legal cases while helping 1000s of people in the process. The Student Law Office was designed to operate like a real solicitor's office, and set up to enable law students to practice with the help and supervision of experienced lawyers. The office allowed members of the public and businesses to seek free legal advice and representation. A total of 600 enquiries were received and 377 cases were conducted, saving clients thousands of pounds in legal costs.
The Judges described the programme as a fantastic model for other institutions wishing to provide a degree that combines theory and practical experience. It is also a key element of the University's commitment to working in the community.
