Male Greater Sage Grouse spend a considerable amount of time and energy for about two months each year displaying on traditional lek sites. They use their inflated air sacs to make the booming and popping sounds while strutting about, all in the hope of attracting a female. The females visiting the lek seem to completely ignore the males, but actually are choosing the male with whom they will mate. About 90% choose the same dominant male. The rest of the males just have to hope for better luck next year.
