    Okay, but it's not like average people are buying ads on major television networks... as for the prices, it's no wonder - the costs of running a television network on a nationwide (USA) scale is gigantic.

    i dont know about america, but in england if a company spends a % on advertising they get tax breaks that more than cover the expense of the ad, so it doesnt really matter if the advert makes them sell more, its just basically free money that helps other people make tv and other things

    These are not evil statistics. A lot of jobs depend on TV advertising - from those working at the network, ad agencies, companies advertising, etc. Also, consider the impact a single ad can have on a company that needs to send their message to millions of people at once. Can be a powerful, albeit, expensive thing - but in some cases you get what you pay for.
