ok so I was wrong. partly.....this is why.
there are some verbs in German where you add a prefix like auf or an or something like that and it totally changes the meaning of the verb. That is the case here: whereas hören means to hear, aufhören means to stop. The whole thing gets complicated by the fact that the prefix shows up towards the end of the sentence, so you may not realize that this is part of the verb.
