Back From the Dead is track #13 on Babyshambles' debut album, Down in Albion, with writing credit going to Doherty and Peter Wolfe. The track was also released as a B Side to Peter Wolfe's debut single, For Lovers. The B Side version of Back From the Dead featured Carl Barat on guitar, and Peter Doherty on vocals, and is commonly the preferred recording, over the Down in Albion version. Back From the Dead has also been recorded a few times by Doherty, acoustically.

The lyrics could have been influenced by the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, the 19th Century French poet; there is a poem called 'The Soul of the Wine' contained in a collection of Baudelaire's poetry, called 'The Flowers of Evil'.

Doherty has said the song to be one of his favourites, and a source of inspiration.
